The celebrations on Mother’s Day started to be more elaborate and well-known in the early 1900s. The Mother’s Day holiday was created by Anna Jarvis, who was an American social activist and philanthropist.

The International Mother’s Day movement began in 1905 when Anna Jarvis got the idea for an event for mothers in honor of her own mother’s death years earlier.

President Woodrow Wilson on February 20, 1914, signed a proclamation that officially established Mother’s Day on the second Sunday of May. This was in response to Mrs. Jarvis’ campaign with help from Mr. John Wanamaker and other supporters of the holiday.

In 1935, President Franklin D. Roosevelt supported legislation that officially made Mother’s Day an American national holiday by decreeing that it be celebrated on the second Sunday in May every year throughout the U.S., which is true today
